Minister Chan’s campus connection

Who knew? Education Minister Chan Chun Sing once played interior designer for an office at NTU.

Nearly 30 years ago, while in the armed forces, he helped set up the Institute of Defence & Strategic Studies, now part of the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS). In those early days of starting the institute, which was then led by Mr S R Nathan (who later became Singapore’s president), it was all hands on deck. Mr Chan was involved in conceptualising the use of the space, including helping to pick out furniture and decide where to place the electrical sockets.

“Once in a while, I feel that I should go back to RSIS and see if the wires are still laid according to our plan,” he quips.
